Letshego Botswana Adopts Phatsimo JSS to Support Long-term Learner Development

Selebi-Phikwe, Botswana – 4 September 2026: Letshego Botswana has adopted Phatsimo Junior Secondary School, formalising a long-term partnership focused on supporting learners, educators and the school’s development.

The announcement was made by Letshego Botswana Chief Executive Officer, Kgotso Bannalotlhe, during Phatsimo JSS’s 30th Anniversary and Prize-Giving Ceremony. Held under the theme, “Phatsimo JSS: Reclaiming its Academic Glory and Excellence,” the ceremony celebrated the school’s history and learner achievements while highlighting the importance of collaboration in improving educational outcomes.

Selebi-Phikwe has demonstrated remarkable resilience as it continues to navigate the economic challenges and transition that followed the closure of the BCL Mine. Recognising the impact this period has had on the community, Letshego remains committed to supporting initiatives that contribute to the town’s long-term renewal and growth. The community’s enduring strength, coupled with its investment in young people, remains central to building a brighter future.

“Through the adoption of Phatsimo Junior Secondary School, we are reaffirming our commitment to supporting the school’s development and creating meaningful opportunities that will benefit learners for years to come. We recognise both the challenges that Selebi-Phikwe has faced and the resilience its people have shown, and we are proud to play a part in empowering the next generation,” said Bannalotlhe.

Letshego has supported Phatsimo JSS for the past three years, contributing more than P100,000 during that period. At the ceremony, the organisation announced an additional contribution of P50,000, together with gifts for the top 50 outstanding learners.

Letshego was keen to support and empower both the community and the young people of SelebiPhikwe through Phatsimo JSS - a school already making a meaningful impact and one that, with sustained support, has the potential to make further gains towards becoming one of Botswana's top three-performing junior secondary schools.

The partnership will be implemented with the school and relevant education authorities, guided by Phatsimo JSS’s priorities. Potential areas of support include academic development, financial literacy, career guidance, digital skills and mentorship.

Addressing the ceremony, the Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Honourable Ketlhalefile Motshegwa, emphasised that educational success requires the commitment of Government, teachers, parents, learners, communities and strategic partners.

“Every child deserves a safe and supportive learning environment. When we protect our children, support our teachers and invest in education, we invest in the future of our communities and our nation,” he said.

Bannalotlhe encouraged learners to view education as preparation for life, highlighting the importance of discipline, problem-solving, responsible use of technology and sound financial habits.

“Examination results matter, but the habits you build while chasing them matter even more. They are what will carry you long after you leave these gates,” he told learners.

The adoption aligns with Letshego’s purpose of “Improving Lives” and its commitment to expanding opportunity through education.
